Tips to handle sextortion

Sextortion (where someone threatens to share or use intimate images to pressure or blackmail a young person) is becoming increasingly common in New Zealand. It can be frightening and overwhelming to be a victim of a sextortion attempt, and your response can make a big difference.

If your child is experiencing this, they may feel ashamed, scared, or unsure what to do next. It’s important they know they’re not alone, and that support is available.

This video walks you through practical steps you can take, how to respond calmly, help your child regain a sense of control, and take action to stop the situation from escalating. It also covers when and where to seek further help.

If someone's nudes are shared without consent, it’s never the person's fault in the nudes – the responsibility is 100% with the person who passed them on.
